About Can

Can formed in Cologne in 1968 with Irmin Schmidt and Holger Czukay, both students of Karlheinz Stockhausen, alongside guitarist Michael Karoli and drummer Jaki Liebezeit. Their first singer was the American Malcolm Mooney, who sang on Monster Movie. Damo Suzuki, whom the band found busking in Munich, replaced him and stayed through Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi and Future Days.

The band recorded long improvisations in its own studio and Czukay edited the tapes into finished tracks, a method that shaped the loose, repetitive grooves of their best-known albums. Their single "Spoon" became a hit in Germany after being used as a television theme. Can reunited with Mooney for Rite Time in 1989.
