About Big Star
Big Star formed in Memphis in 1971. Alex Chilton had already sung on the Box Tops hit 'The Letter' as a teenager, and he joined Chris Bell, bassist Andy Hummel and drummer Jody Stephens. Their albums on Ardent, #1 Record and Radio City, drew strong reviews but suffered from poor distribution. Bell left after the first record and died in a car crash in 1978. The fractured, fragile Third/Sister Lovers was shelved for years before its release.
Bands including R.E.M. and the Replacements later cited Big Star, and the Replacements wrote a song called 'Alex Chilton'. Chilton and Stephens revived the band in 1993 with Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow of the Posies, and it played on until Chilton's death in 2010.
