About Billy Joel
Billy Joel was born in the Bronx in 1949 and grew up in Hicksville on Long Island. He played in the Hassles and the organ-and-drums duo Attila before his solo debut, Cold Spring Harbor, in 1971. The 1977 album The Stranger brought 'Just the Way You Are' and 'Only the Good Die Young', and through the 1980s he moved freely between rock, doo-wop pastiche on An Innocent Man and the rapid-fire history list of 'We Didn't Start the Fire'.
He stopped releasing pop albums after River of Dreams in 1993 and kept performing his catalogue live. From 2014 to 2024 he played a monthly residency at Madison Square Garden in New York, a run that ended after more than a hundred shows. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.
