Woe, Is Me
Atlanta post-hardcore act from the early-2010s scene wave, built on traded clean and screamed vocals over electronic-tinged breakdowns.
Woe, Is Me formed in Atlanta in the fall of 2009, put together by drummer Austin Thornton, formerly of Of Machines, alongside guitarist Kevin Hanson, bassist Cory Ferris and guitarist Ben Ferris. Vocalist Michael Bohn joined early on, and Tyler Carter, working as a nurse at the time, was brought in by Rise Records to handle clean vocals.
Woe, Is Me were part of the wave of Rise Records signings that shaped post-hardcore in the early 2010s, trading screamed and sung verses over synth-inflected riffs and breakdowns. Demo tracks, including a cover of Kesha's "Tik Tok," spread online and caught the attention of The Artery Foundation, leading Rise Records and its Velocity Records imprint to sign the band before they had played a single show.
Number[s] was released on August 31, 2010, reaching No. 16 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart. Carter's soul-inflected clean vocals drew comparisons to Jonny Craig, who guested on the record, and the band toured heavily behind it alongside acts including From First to Last and Sleeping with Sirens.
Tyler Carter and Michael Bohn both left Woe, Is Me to form Issues, part of a run of lineup changes that left guitarist Kevin Hanson as the only original member by the time the band split in September 2013. A reunion followed in July 2022 under a new 'Vengeance' lineup, with the band playing its first show in nine years in Dallas, Texas, that October.
