Descartes a Kant
Guadalajara art-rock outfit whose theatrical, cartoon-horror version of experimental pop can shift from lullaby to shriek inside a single bar.
Descartes a Kant started in Guadalajara in 2001, formed as a teenager by Sandrushka Petrova with an all-female lineup playing local parties. The band's name comes from a philosophy anthology chapter tracing the shift from Descartes to Kant, chosen to mirror its own swings between opposing musical ideas.
Their music mixes progressive and art rock with no wave, surf, electronic textures and film-score atmosphere, moving abruptly between quiet, childlike sections and bursts of noise and screaming. Early on the band called this a "bipolar-schizoid sound," pairing sweet, melodic tonalities with dissonance and strident noise. Records tend to follow a loose narrative or conceptual thread, and shows lean on theatrical staging and costume to match the music's unsettling, cartoonish tone.
The band's debut album, Paper Dolls, appeared in 2007 on the label Discos Intolerancia. A lineup change in 2010 brought in guitarist Jorge Chavez, Ana Cristina Moreno and Memo Ibarra, and the following studio album, Il Visore Lunatique (2012), a concept record about madness and mental illness, drew attention from Mike Patton and Dave Lombardo and took the band on its first international tours.
Victims of Love Propaganda (2017), the band's first album for a North American label, was recorded in Chicago with engineer Steve Albini as a concept piece about Western ideas of love and happiness, staged live as a three-act performance in Mexico City and Guadalajara. The album's tour took Descartes a Kant through Mexico, Europe, the United States and South America, opening for acts including Bauhaus, Cibo Matto and Dead Cross.
In 2022 members Dafne Carballo, Andro Muñoz and Jorge Chavez left the group, which returned as a quartet by the end of that year. Drummer Leo Padua joined in 2023, alongside a sampling and programming unit the band calls The DAK, and the reshaped lineup released a fourth studio album, After Destruction, later that year.
