Hit Like A Girl
Philadelphia emo with a pop-punk backbone, built on plainspoken diaristic lyrics about anxiety, doubt and self-repair.
Hit Like a Girl is the songwriting project of Philadelphia musician Nicolle Maroulis (they/them), who started the band in 2017 and writes in an emo idiom with clear pop-punk roots. The songs are direct and diaristic, dealing with anxiety, self-doubt, identity and recovery in plain language rather than metaphor, set against bright guitars and straightforward structures.
The music pulls from pop, emo, indie and hardcore, landing somewhere between yearning and hook-driven catchiness. Listeners have drawn comparisons to Tigers Jaw, Future Teens and Indigo De Souza, bands working similar ground between intimacy and immediacy.
Live, Maroulis is joined by a rotating cast that currently includes Mol White on synth and backing vocals, Mike Davis on drums and backing tracks, and various guitarists. The band has shared bills with Mom Jeans, Kississippi, Origami Angel, Pool Kids and Prince Daddy and the Hyena, and has toured with John-Allison Weiss and The Iron Roses.
Maroulis founded the nonprofit No More Dysphoria in 2016, an organization that helps transgender people cover the costs of major aspects of transition, and the project as a whole has aimed to represent and encourage queer and trans artists.
Since 2017 the band has released three full-length albums, You Make Sense, What Makes Love Last and Heart Racer, along with the EP Becoming. A new album, Burning at Both Ends, described as the most collaborative record to date, is set for release in March 2026.
