Twitching Tongues formed in Los Angeles in 2009, built around brothers Colin Young on vocals and Taylor Young on guitar. The band pairs heavy, mid-paced metallic hardcore with doom and alternative metal influences, and Colin Young has named Type O Negative's Peter Steele as a formative influence on his singing.
The band is distinguished mainly by Colin Young's clean, low vocal delivery rather than the shouted style common to hardcore. Critics have struggled to pin the sound to one genre, variously calling it groove metal, metalcore and sludge metal.
Their catalog runs from the Sleep Therapy EP-turned-album era through In Love There Is No Law in 2013, Disharmony in 2015, which drew praise from NPR and Vice, and Gaining Purpose Through Passionate Hatred in 2018, alongside earlier EPs I & I and Preacher Man.
After a hiatus, the band re-released a remastered Sleep Therapy in 2023 and resumed playing live, later putting out a series of Misfits covers EPs billed as Twitchfits. Drummer Cayle Sain died in December 2023 and was replaced by original drummer Mike Cesario. Taylor Young is also known as a producer and engineer working with hardcore and metal bands out of his Los Angeles studio.
