Los Angeles band who came up in the early djent wave and stayed strange — polyrhythmic guitar figures loosened by hip-hop swing and clean-sung hooks.
Volumes formed in Los Angeles in 2009, when guitarist Daniel Braunstein and drummer Diego Farias began the project as a home recording effort, originally intending it to feature only one vocalist before expanding into a full band. They emerged alongside the wave of bands building songs from low-tuned, syncopated guitar riffing that came to be labelled djent, drawing on metal, hip-hop, jazz and classical influences.
The band signed to Mediaskare Records in 2009 and released their debut album, Via, in 2011, which reached number one on iTunes' Rock & Metal chart. A second album, No Sleep, followed in 2014, and the group later moved to Fearless Records for subsequent releases.
The band pairs stuttering polyrhythmic riffs and screamed vocals with sung choruses and a rhythmic feel that borrows from hip-hop as much as from metalcore, and they have used two vocalists for much of their career.
Volumes have released three further albums since, Different Animals in 2017, Happier? in 2021 and Mirror Touch in 2025, alongside EPs including The Concept of Dreaming, Coming Clean and Bend(ed). Their line-up has changed repeatedly, with bassist Raad Soudani the only constant member; the current group also features vocalists Michael Barr and Myke Terry and drummer Nick Ursich.
