Connecticut metalcore working in precise, downtuned riff architecture and hairpin dynamic turns — technical weight with the melodies left intact.

Currents come from Newtown, Connecticut, formed in 2011 by drummer Jeff Brown. The lineup has turned over repeatedly since, and by 2018 no original members remained; the current group is vocalist Brian Wille, guitarists Chris Wiseman and Ryan Castaldi, bassist Christian Pulgarin and drummer Matt Young.

Their writing pairs downtuned, rhythmically knotted riffing indebted to djent with melodic sections and clean-sung passages, swinging between breakdown-heavy stretches and quieter, atmospheric ones. Wille moves between clear vocals and screams, and reviewers have noted flashes of deathcore and progressive metal alongside stated influences such as Holding Absence, Circa Survive and Thrice.

The band self-released the EP Victimized in 2013 and Life // Lost in 2015, the latter featuring a guest spot from Ricky Armellino of This or the Apocalypse. SharpTone Records signed Currents in 2017 and issued the debut album The Place I Feel Safest that June, followed by the EP I Let the Devil In in 2018.

The Way it Ends followed in 2020 to notably strong reviews, with critics setting the band apart from a crowded field of modern metalcore acts, and an instrumental edition arrived in 2021. The third album, The Death We Seek, was released in 2023 after a run of singles including "Vengeance" and "Remember Me."

Currents have toured extensively within the heavy music circuit, including runs alongside Miss May I, Kingdom of Giants and LANDMVRKS. Recent activity includes the 2025 single "It Only Gets Darker" and the surprise EP All That Follows.
