Rett Madison
West Virginia-raised, LA-based songwriter whose album One for Jackie works through her mother's death in Appalachian ballad form, with a big blues voice and '70s Dylan and Dusty Springfield in the arrangements.
Rett Madison came out of West Virginia and now writes from Los Angeles. Her first record, Pin-Up Daddy, arrived in 2021 and set the pattern: plainly worded songs about family, faith and being queer in a small town, sung in a low, gospel-inflected voice that she pushes hard when a line calls for it. She works mostly from guitar and piano, and the arrangements around her lean on organ and pedal steel rather than anything slicker.
