Led Zeppelin's singer in his rootsy later life, trading the stadium howl for hushed folk, blues and gospel reworkings with a small acoustic band.

Robert Plant was born in West Bromwich in 1948 and grew up in Halesowen, in the West Midlands of England. He left home at 16 to sing in local blues bands, among them Band of Joy with drummer John Bonham. In 1968 Jimmy Page and manager Peter Grant brought him into what became Led Zeppelin, and he was its singer and lyricist until the band ended in 1980.

His solo records began with Pictures at Eleven in 1982 and The Principle of Moments in 1983, both top ten on the Billboard 200. The Honeydrippers, a side project with Page on guitar, had a hit with "Sea of Love" in 1984, and Now and Zen in 1988 became his biggest-selling solo album. In the 1990s Page and Plant made two albums together and won a Grammy for "Most High".

From the 2000s his music moved toward blues, folk and music from beyond rock. Dreamland and Mighty ReArranger came with his band Strange Sensation. Raising Sand, his 2007 album with Alison Krauss produced by T Bone Burnett, won Album of the Year at the Grammys. A revived Band of Joy followed in 2010 with Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller and Darrell Scott, and Plant and Krauss reunited for Raise the Roof in 2021.

The Sensational Space Shifters backed him on Lullaby and... The Ceaseless Roar and Carry Fire. Since 2019 he has led Saving Grace, an acoustic group with singer Suzi Dian, and their first studio album, Saving Grace, came out on Nonesuch Records in September 2025, recorded in the Cotswolds and on the Welsh Borders.
