The Amity Affliction
Queensland metalcore veterans two decades deep, alternating screamed verses with huge clean choruses — heavy music that never hides its emotional stakes.
The Amity Affliction began in Gympie, Queensland, when school friends Ahren Stringer and Troy Brady started the band in their final year of high school. They named it for a friend who had died in a car accident at seventeen: 'Amity' for the friendship, 'Affliction' for the struggle his death left behind. Joel Birch joined on vocals soon after.
The band's songs typically pair Birch's screamed verses with melodic clean choruses sung by bassist Ahren Stringer, a dynamic that has stayed constant across their catalogue even as the production and electronic elements have shifted over the years.
Birch's lyrics deal directly with depression, grief and suicide, drawn from his own past struggles, and that openness has been as much a part of the band's reputation as the music itself.
Their 2008 debut album, Severed Ties, reached the Australian albums chart and featured guest vocalists from several other Australian hardcore bands. Since then they have released a long run of albums, nine studio records in total, toured internationally including the UK, and remained one of the most widely heard Australian metalcore bands of their generation.
