Texas Hippie Coalition
Denison, Texas outfit dealing in what frontman Big Dad Ritch calls red dirt metal — Southern swagger welded to thick, stoner-weight riffing.
Texas Hippie Coalition took shape in Denison, Texas in 2004, formed by Big Dad Ritch with his friend John Exall and others, before settling into the lineup that recorded their first album.
Their debut, Rollin, arrived in July 2010 under producer Dave Prater and was the band's first release to reach a national audience.
The music sits at the meeting point of Southern rock, stoner rock and heavy metal, down-tuned and groove-heavy under lyrics about drinking, driving and Texas itself, with 'red dirt metal' as the band's own shorthand for it.
Working with producer Bob Marlette, they released Peacemaker in August 2012, which reached number 20 on the Billboard Hard Rock Albums chart, and followed it with Ride On in 2014 under producer Skidd Mills.
The lineup has changed steadily around Ritch, with Exall's 2018 departure leaving Ritch as the sole founding member, while the band kept releasing records: High in the Saddle in 2019 through Entertainment One, The Name Lives On in 2023, and Gunsmoke in 2024, bringing their total to eight studio albums.
