Missouri singer with a weathered, outsized voice far older than he is — small-town country that found its audience online before radio.

Samuel Robert Barber was born on April 15, 2003, and raised on his family's ancestral farm in Frohna; his father worked as a mechanic and his mother as a nurse. He took up music at sixteen after learning of his great-grandfather's musical background, and had been enrolled in the civil engineering program at the State Technical College of Missouri before turning to songwriting full-time.

He began posting on TikTok in 2021, first drawing attention with a cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man," followed by covers of "Dancing in the Sky" and "Ophelia." His debut single, "Run Away High," came out that September. He also auditioned for American Idol's twentieth season, earning a golden ticket to Hollywood Week before being eliminated in footage that never aired.

His voice is a heavy, rasping baritone, usually set against sparse acoustic guitar, and his songs deal in plain-spoken accounts of work, faith and leaving home.

"Straight and Narrow," released in late 2022, became his first charting single and was later certified platinum. His debut EP, Million Eyes, arrived in September 2023, followed by the live release Live EP 001 in early 2024. "Indigo," his duet with Avery Anna, reached the Billboard Hot 100 in 2024 and was also certified platinum.

Within months of his first headlining show, a sold-out night in Nashville in mid-2023, Barber performed at Bruce Springsteen's Hyde Park series, opened for Ed Sheeran, and made his Grand Ole Opry debut. His music is released through Lockeland Springs, an imprint of Atlantic Records.
