Maggie Rose
Nashville singer who drifted out of mainstream country toward horn-fed soul and roots-rock — built around a live band and a gospel-sized voice.
Maggie Rose was born Margaret Rose Durante in Potomac, Maryland, and graduated from Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School. She began singing at 16, performing regularly with The B Street Band, a Bruce Springsteen tribute act. She attended Clemson University before moving to Nashville in her sophomore year, a shift encouraged by producer Tommy Mottola, to pursue music full time.
In 2009 she signed to Universal Republic under her birth name and released a cover of Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody." A year later she moved to the independent Emrose Records, charting with "Mississippi's Crying" and "Maybe Tonight," whose video reached number one on Great American Country's Top 20 Countdown, a first for an independent artist.
She took the name Maggie Rose in 2012 after signing with Scott Siman's RPM Entertainment, releasing the debut album Cut to Impress and its single "I Ain't Your Mama." She toured with Gary Allan and Sheryl Crow, playing roughly 150 shows across 49 states in 2013, and responded to the country-radio "Tomato-gate" controversy by releasing a new song each week under the banner Tomato Tuesdays.
After a spell with Starstruck Records, where she released Change the Whole Thing in 2018, her sound moved away from mainstream country toward soul, gospel and roots-rock. The 2021 album Have a Seat, recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, made that shift explicit, built around a full band with horns and her big, belted vocal delivery.
Live work remains central to her reputation. She tours steadily with a working band, stretching songs out in performance rather than replaying the records straight. Her fourth studio album, No One Gets Out Alive, released in 2024, was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Americana Album at the 2025 ceremony.
