American artist who turned an uncanny, too-sweet internet persona into genuine metal credibility — bubblegum melody and blast beats sharing the same song.

Moriah Pereira was born in Boston and moved to Nashville with her family at 14. She once wanted to be a Rockette, took years of dance lessons, and was bullied at school for being quiet, which led her to finish her education through homeschooling before relocating to Los Angeles at 18 to pursue music.

She began posting song covers on YouTube in 2011, then in 2014 started making performance-art videos with collaborator Titanic Sinclair, playing an uncanny, doll-like figure alongside a recurring mannequin character named Charlotte. Poppy ended her creative and personal partnership with Sinclair in 2019, saying he had emotionally abused her.

Her first two albums, built on glossy electropop and art-pop, sold moderately. The shift arrived with her third album, I Disagree (2020), which moved into metal and industrial rock and became her first entry on the Billboard 200; its single "Bloodmoney" earned a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance, making Poppy the first solo woman nominated in that category.

After an experimental stretch, her sixth album, Negative Spaces (2024), brought a critical rebound. That year she also appeared on Bad Omens' "V.A.N" and Knocked Loose's "Suffocate," the latter earning her a second Best Metal Performance nomination, while her seventh album, Empty Hands (2026), became her second Billboard 200 entry.
