DevilDriver is a metal band formed in Santa Barbara, California, in 2003 by vocalist Dez Fafara after his departure from Coal Chamber. The group plays groove-oriented metal with elements of thrash and death metal, built on down-tuned riffing and Fafara's harsh, shouted vocals.
The band started out under the name Deathride, growing from barbecues and jam sessions Fafara hosted after moving to Santa Barbara. Trademark conflicts with another act and a bicycle racing team forced a change, and the replacement name was drawn from an Italian witchcraft term for bells once used to drive away evil.
DevilDriver's self-titled debut came out on Roadrunner Records in 2003 and entered the Top Heatseekers chart at number 17. The follow-up, The Fury of Our Maker's Hand, was recorded in isolation at a pecan ranch outside El Paso, Texas, and reached number 117 on the Billboard 200 in 2005.
The band has released a long run of albums and has kept up a heavy touring schedule for most of its existence, with a lineup that has changed a number of times around Fafara. They also recorded an album of country songs reworked in a metal style.
