Dry Kill Logic
New York metal outfit out of the turn-of-the-millennium groove and nu-metal wave — down-tuned churn under vocals that swing between bark and bellow.
Dry Kill Logic formed in Westchester County, New York, in 1995, first performing under the names Hinge and later Hinge AD. After signing to Roadrunner Records around 2000, a recording studio's ownership of the word "Hinge" forced a further change; the eventual name turned up in a mixing console manual, describing circuitry that mutes an unprocessed signal.
Before the deal, the band self-released two EPs, Cause Moshing Is Good Fun in 1997 and Elemental Evil in 1998, through their own label, Psychodrama Records. Those releases led to opening slots for Coal Chamber, Incubus, Anthrax and System of a Down, building a following ahead of any major-label profile.
Their sound is built on down-tuned, percussive riffing and tight, mid-paced grooves, with Cliff Rigano's vocals moving between shouted verses and sung, melodic choruses. Over successive albums the band leaned further toward straightforward metal and metalcore textures, shedding some of the earlier nu-metal trappings while keeping the rhythmic heaviness intact.
The debut album, The Darker Side of Nonsense, arrived in 2001 and sold roughly 100,000 copies worldwide, helped by relentless touring alongside Fear Factory, Kittie, Ill Niño, Spineshank, Saliva and Slayer. Roadrunner pushed for a more commercial follow-up, and the band left the label in 2002; guitarist Scott Thompson exited around the same time, replaced by Jason Bozzi.
The second album, The Dead and Dreaming, followed in 2004 through Psychodrama Music Group alongside Repossession Records and Germany's SPV. Fifteen months on the road followed, opening with Motörhead in Germany, continuing through joint bills with Hed PE and Drowning Pool, a run on Dave Mustaine's 2005 Gigantour, and headline dates across the UK, Europe and Australia alongside Fear Factory and Devildriver.
