Chicago-area group that folded keyboards and sweeping synth leads into deathcore early, helping define the technical, djent-adjacent wing of the genre.

Born of Osiris formed in Palatine, Illinois, a Chicago suburb, in 2003, with its members drawn from Fremd High School and the local Northland Chicago metalcore scene that also produced Veil of Maya, Monsters, Oceano and For All I Am. The band went through several earlier names, including Diminished, Your Heart Engraved and Rosecrance, before settling on Born of Osiris in 2007, a name drawn from the Egyptian deity and the tale of his son Horus.

Their music combines the palm-muted, syncopated riffing associated with djent and progressive metalcore with harsh vocals, blast-driven drumming and prominent keyboard parts, layered synth leads and orchestral washes sitting alongside the guitars rather than behind them. Signed to Sumerian Records in 2007, the band released its debut album, A Higher Place, in 2009, which reached number 73 on the Billboard 200.

They toured on the Night of the Living Shred bill with All Shall Perish, After the Burial, Caliban and Suffokate, and supported Hatebreed alongside Cannibal Corpse, Unearth and Hate Eternal. The band has also played the Summer Slaughter Tour across multiple years and the Music as a Weapon Tour 4.

Guitarist Jason Richardson joined in 2009, and the resulting stable lineup produced The Discovery, which reached number 87 on the Billboard 200 in 2011, before Richardson left the band later that year. The current lineup pairs sole founding member Cameron Losch on drums with vocalist Ronnie Canizaro, guitarist and keyboardist Nick Rossi, lead guitarist Travis Montgomery and bassist Dan Marinaro.

That combination of deathcore aggression and keyboard-led melody became one of the group's identifying traits, and they are often cited among the bands that pushed progressive and technical elements into the style, working with Sumerian Records for much of their career.
