Masked Saguenay duo who loop double-necked microtonal guitar into hypnotic, odd-metred math rock — 2026's strangest breakout story.

Angine de Poitrine formed in Saguenay, Quebec, in 2019, led by guitarist-bassist Khn de Poitrine and drummer Klek de Poitrine, both from the La Baie borough, who had already been playing together for two decades since they were 13. The band's name, French for angina pectoris, started as a joke about tightness in the chest and later became a description of the anxious pulse in their music.

The masks came from a scheduling accident: booked twice in one week at the same Saguenay venue, the pair worried a second audience would not show, so they played disguised under a new name. They built oversized papier-mâché masks with exaggerated noses and wore black-and-white polka-dot suits, an idea the duo has compared to an extended prank.

Musically, the duo works in math rock, progressive rock and post-rock, building looped guitar figures, including double-necked and microtonally tuned instruments, into long, repetitive passages set in irregular time signatures. The material is largely instrumental, favouring accumulation and trance-like repetition over conventional verse-chorus structure.

The duo released their debut album, Vol. 1, in 2024 and spent the following year gaining notice on the Quebec festival circuit. In December 2025 they won Artist of the Year at the GAMIQ awards, and a live session recorded soon after for American radio station KEXP went viral in early 2026, drawing millions of views. Their second album, Vol. II, followed in April 2026, alongside international touring.
