Michigan-raised Nashville songwriter who spent years writing hits for other people, including Blake Shelton's 'Lonely Tonight', before stepping out as a singer himself.

Ryan Hurd was born in Chicago and grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, before moving to Nashville to work as a songwriter. He met his future wife, Maren Morris, while writing the ballad "Last Turn Home" for Tim McGraw. His other writing credits include cuts for Luke Bryan and Lady A, plus "Intoxicated," a 2015 single for the rock band Hinder that reached the US Active Rock chart.

His own material leans toward a soft-edged, pop-informed strain of contemporary country, with conversational lyrics and unhurried, mid-tempo arrangements that favor plainspoken storytelling over rock-leaning production.

Hurd signed with Sony Music Nashville in 2017 and released a self-titled EP, whose single "We Do Us" drew millions of streams and got him named to Rolling Stone Country's 'Artists You Need to Know' list and CMT's 'Listen Up' artists of 2016. His debut solo single was "Love in a Bar," and he later toured behind the Platonic EP with Adam Doleac and Niko Moon, after earlier opening shows for Chase Rice, Thomas Rhett, and Florida Georgia Line.

"Chasing After You," his duet with Maren Morris, became his first top-ten hit on the country charts and crossed onto the Hot 100, serving as the lead single from his debut full-length, Pelago, released in October 2021.

Hurd and Morris married in Nashville in March 2018 and had a son in 2020. The couple separated in October 2023 and reached a divorce settlement in January 2024.
