Rivers of Nihil
Pennsylvania technical death metal band who folded saxophone into the blast beats and made it feel inevitable rather than gimmicky — heavy music with a jazz lung.
Rivers of Nihil formed in Reading, Pennsylvania in 2009 and have spent their career pushing technical death metal outward rather than inward. Early work leaned on the dense riffing and blast-driven precision associated with the style, while later records added atmosphere, clean passages and progressive structure without softening the impact. The band conceived a run of albums around the theme of the four seasons, a framework that shaped both the writing and the artwork.
Their first EP, Hierarchy, came out in 2009, produced by Carson Slovak of the band Century, who also worked with acts such as August Burns Red and Black Crown Initiate and later contributed writing to a track on Where Owls Know My Name. Early tours had them opening for Decapitated, Suffocation, Dying Fetus and Misery Index.
A second EP, Temporality Unbound, followed in 2011 with producer Len Carmichael, spawning a video for "(sin)Chronos." The band signed to Metal Blade Records in 2012 and recorded its first album with producer Erik Rutan at Mana Recording Studios in Tampa, released in October 2013 with cover art by Dan Seagrave, who also designed the next two albums' artwork.
The 2018 album Where Owls Know My Name drew the widest attention, largely for the way saxophone and more open, exploratory arrangements sat alongside the extremity, and it debuted at number 61 on the Billboard 200. Guitarist Brody Uttley and bassist Adam Biggs have been central to the group's direction, with Biggs taking on lead vocals after the band's 2022 split from singer Jake Dieffenbach.
Guitarist Andy Thomas joined around the same time, and the pair's first release together, "The Sub-Orbital Blues," arrived in 2023. The band's catalogue now runs to two EPs and five studio albums, released through Metal Blade, with a self-titled record following in 2025.
