About Erykah Badu
Erykah Badu was born Erica Wright in Dallas in 1971. Baduizm and its single 'On & On' brought her jazz-inflected phrasing and wrapped-head style to a wide audience in 1997, and a live album the same year added the fan favourite 'Tyrone'. Mama's Gun (2000), with 'Bag Lady', and Worldwide Underground (2003) loosened the structures further, and she won a Grammy alongside The Roots for 'You Got Me'.
New Amerykah Part One (4th World War) in 2008 and Part Two (Return of the Ankh) in 2010 moved through murky beats, heavy funk and spacey soul, and the 2015 mixtape But You Caint Use My Phone built a whole record around telephones and calling. Away from music she also works as a doula.
