About Jackie Wilson

Jackie Wilson was born in Detroit in 1934 and boxed as an amateur before turning to singing. In 1953 he replaced Clyde McPhatter as lead singer of Billy Ward and His Dominoes, then went solo with 'Reet Petite', co-written by a young Berry Gordy, and recorded for Brunswick for the rest of his career.

His shows combined splits, spins and knee drops with a voice that could move from a gospel shout to a near-operatic sustain within a single line, and later soul performers borrowed heavily from both. In 1975 he collapsed on stage from a heart attack and never recovered, dying in 1984. A reissue of 'Reet Petite' with a claymation video reached number one in the UK in 1986.
