About Amy Winehouse
Amy Winehouse came out of north London with a voice steeped in jazz singers such as Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington. Her first album, Frank (2003), made largely with Salaam Remi, mixed jazz, hip-hop rhythms and sharp, funny lyrics about men and London nightlife.
Back to Black (2006) turned toward 1960s girl-group soul and produced 'Rehab', 'Back to Black' and 'Tears Dry on Their Own', winning five Grammy Awards in 2008. Her version of 'Valerie' with Mark Ronson became one of her best-known recordings. She died in 2011 at the age of 27, and the posthumous collection Lioness: Hidden Treasures followed that year.
