About Doc & Merle Watson
Doc & Merle Watson was the touring partnership of Arthel 'Doc' Watson, a blind guitarist from Deep Gap, North Carolina, and his son Merle. Doc came to wide attention during the early-1960s folk revival, and Merle joined him on the road as a teenager in the mid-1960s, learning guitar largely so he could play alongside his father.
Their repertoire drew on mountain ballads, fiddle tunes, country blues, gospel and rockabilly, with Doc's fast, clean flatpicking set against Merle's slide and fingerstyle work. They recorded and toured together for about two decades, winning Grammys along the way, until Merle's death in a farm accident in 1985.
