A pagode voice with a pop career, from Soweto's romantic run to two decades of solo hits.
Belo, born Marcelo Pires Vieira in Rio de Janeiro, first became known as the lead singer of Soweto, the pagode group behind "Farol das Estrelas" and a run of romantic hits through the 1990s. His voice, high and unhurried, was the group's main identifying feature.
He went solo in the early 2000s and has recorded steadily since, keeping the pagode instrumentation of cavaquinho, banjo and hand percussion while writing for radio. His live shows lean on the Soweto catalogue as much as the solo one.
