Anjimile
Fingerpicked folk with a choral, hymn-like weight from a trans songwriter on 4AD; The King traded the early warmth for spare, grief-struck intensity.
About Anjimile
Anjimile is the project of Boston-raised songwriter Anjimile Chithambo. The debut album Giver Taker, released in 2020, was a set of warm, close-miked guitar songs, many of them written in the years after getting sober and dealing plainly with recovery, faith and family.
The King, Anjimile's first record for 4AD, pared the arrangements back further. Guitar parts are sparse and repetitive, and stacked, chant-like vocals carry much of the weight, giving the songs about grief and anger a heavy, ceremonial feel. Live, the delivery is quiet and deliberate, with long stretches built from a single voice and a guitar figure.
