Leenalchi
Seoul band setting pansori singers over two basses and a drummer, so a 200-year-old Korean epic comes out as taut, deadpan dance-punk.

About Leenalchi
Leenalchi formed in Seoul in 2019 around bassist and film composer Jang Young-gyu, with a second bassist, a drummer and four pansori singers. The band takes its name from Yi Nal-chi, a 19th-century pansori performer, and draws its lyrics from Sugungga, the traditional tale of a turtle sent to fetch a rabbit's liver for an ailing dragon king.
Their 2020 album Sugungga set those passages over minimal, repetitive basslines. The track "Tiger Is Coming" spread widely after it soundtracked a Korea Tourism Organization video featuring Ambiguous Dance Company, which brought pansori to an audience that had never heard the form.
