About Meshell Ndegeocello

Meshell Ndegeocello was born in Berlin and grew up around Washington, DC, where she came up playing bass in the city's go-go scene. Her 1993 debut, Plantation Lullabies, was one of the first releases on Madonna's Maverick label, and her 1994 duet with John Mellencamp on Van Morrison's "Wild Night" became a radio hit.

Since then she has released records that swing between dense funk, quiet balladry and covers projects. After years as an in-demand session bassist and producer, she signed to Blue Note for The Omnichord Real Book, which won the first Grammy for Best Alternative Jazz Album. No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin followed in 2024, setting Baldwin's writing to music.
