JJ Grey & Mofro

JJ Grey & Mofro started out billed simply as Mofro, releasing the debut album Blackwater in 2001 and following it with Lochloosa, named for a lake near Grey's home ground outside Jacksonville. Later records came out on Alligator Records before the band name settled on its current form.

Grey writes almost entirely from his own life in the North Florida swampland, mixing funk-rock with Southern soul and blues, and singing with a preacher's stomp. His songs deal in redemption, hard luck and inner peace, often alongside celebrations of nights out with old friends. Olustee is his tenth album, his first in nine years and the first he produced himself.
