About Grateful Dead
Grateful Dead formed in the Bay Area in 1965, first as the Warlocks, with Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Ron "Pigpen" McKernan; drummer Mickey Hart joined in 1967. The band played Ken Kesey's Acid Tests and became fixtures of the Haight-Ashbury scene, with lyricist Robert Hunter writing many of Garcia's songs. In 1970 they released Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, two records of close harmonies and country-leaning songwriting.
No two setlists matched, and the band let fans record its concerts, which built a vast trading culture among the travelling Deadheads. 'Touch of Grey' gave them their only top-ten single in 1987. The group ended with Garcia's death in 1995, and surviving members have since carried the songbook on in outfits including The Other Ones, The Dead and Dead & Company.
