156/Silence
Pittsburgh metalcore outfit built on dissonant, mathy riffing and unrelenting vocal delivery — hardcore aggression with the corners deliberately left jagged.
156/Silence formed in Pittsburgh in 2015, first appearing with the EP Unrequited, Unrefuted, and Undeniably - I'm Alone before releasing the debut full-length And Everything Was Beautiful in 2016. Guitarist Jimmy Howell has remained in the band since its founding, anchoring the group through several rounds of turnover among singers, drummers and bassists.
Their music leans on dissonant, off-kilter guitar work and abrupt rhythmic shifts, closer to mathcore and 1990s metallic hardcore than to the melodic end of the genre, with vocals delivered almost entirely in a strained shout.
Undercover Scumbag arrived in 2018 with an almost entirely new lineup, including singer Jack Murray and guitarist Ryan Wilkinson, who have stayed on since. Irrational Pull followed in 2020 and Narrative in 2022, keeping songs short and dense rather than expansive. The 2024 album People Watching marked a shift further toward metalcore and away from the band's earlier straight hardcore leanings.
In March 2025, bassist Lukas Booker died unexpectedly. The band said it would go ahead with previously booked tour dates alongside Silent Planet and Invent Animate, with Mike Ernst, one of the group's original members, moving to bass.
