Turnstile formed in Baltimore in 2010, emerging from the Maryland hardcore scene before gradually widening their sound well beyond it. The core of their music remains hardcore punk — short songs, blunt riffs, shouted vocals — but over successive records they have folded in elements of alternative rock, funk rhythms, synth textures and softer, floating interludes that sit between the heavier passages.

The band's live reputation was built on the physical, participatory shows typical of hardcore: crowd movement, stage dives and short sets played at close quarters. As their audience grew beyond punk circles, they carried that approach onto larger stages, and their combination of hardcore roots and pop-leaning melody has made them one of the more widely heard bands to come out of American hardcore in recent years.
