The Avalanches

The Avalanches formed in Melbourne in the late 1990s, growing out of a rowdy local band scene before settling on a method built almost entirely from samples. Their 2000 debut, Since I Left You, produced the single "Frontier Psychiatrist", a dense cut-up of dialogue, horns and novelty records that became the group's calling card.

A sixteen-year gap followed before Wildflower arrived in 2016, with the lineup reduced to a core of Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi. That record leaned further into hip hop, bringing in guest vocalists such as Danny Brown and MF DOOM on "Frankie Sinatra". We Will Always Love You followed in 2020, a looser and more reflective album that again set collaborators' voices against layers of borrowed sound.
