'Are You Gonna Be My Girl' — Aussie garage swagger, reunited, with enough riff-rock singles to keep the tank full.

Nic Cester started the band while still at school with Cameron Muncey, and his brother Chris joined on drums; Mark Wilson came in as bassist the following year. The group tried out names including Mojo Filter, Hi-Fidelity and Duosonic before settling on Jet in 2002, taken from a Paul McCartney and Wings song.

Their debut album, Get Born, arrived during the garage rock revival of the early 2000s and topped the Australian albums chart while reaching the top 20 in the UK and top 30 in the US. Its single "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" became the band's best-known song, itself reaching the top 20 in Australia and the UK and the top 30 in the US.

The sound is straightforward guitar rock with obvious debts to AC/DC, the Rolling Stones and Oasis, mixing riff-driven rockers with slower, piano-led ballads.

At the 2004 ARIA Music Awards the band won six categories, including Album of the Year, for Get Born and its lead single. Their next two records, Shine On (2006) and Shaka Rock (2009), both reached the Australian top five and produced further top 20 singles, including "Look What You've Done," "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is" and "She's a Genius."

The band split in 2012, reformed for shows and tours in 2016, and reunited again in 2023, the same year they were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, returning to touring with the catalogue that made their name.
