Seun Kuti & Egypt 80
Fela Kuti's youngest son fronts his father's old band, keeping Afrobeat long, horn-heavy and pointedly political.
About Seun Kuti & Egypt 80
Seun Anikulapo Kuti began performing with Egypt 80 as a child, opening his father Fela's shows, and took over as the band's leader after Fela died in 1997, when Seun was still a teenager. He sings and plays saxophone, and the group has kept several musicians from the Fela era in its ranks.
Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 records new material rather than replaying the old catalogue. From Africa With Fury: Rise (2011) was co-produced by Brian Eno, and Black Times (2018), which featured Carlos Santana, earned a Grammy nomination. The lyrics go after corruption, corporate power and political leaders across Africa and beyond.
