About R.E.M.

R.E.M. formed in Athens, Georgia in 1980 with Michael Stipe on vocals, Peter Buck on guitar, Mike Mills on bass and Bill Berry on drums. Their 1983 debut album Murmur, released on I.R.S. Records, set out the early sound: ringing Rickenbacker arpeggios, melodic bass lines and vocals that were often hard to make out.

After moving to Warner Bros. with Green in 1988, the band reached a global audience with Out of Time and Automatic for the People, then turned up the distortion on Monster. Berry left in 1997 and the others carried on as a trio. R.E.M. was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 and disbanded in 2011.
