About John Carroll Kirby
John Carroll Kirby is a keyboardist, composer and producer based in Los Angeles who spent years writing and playing on other artists' records before his own music found a wider audience. Alongside his work with Solange, his collaborators have come mostly from R&B and pop, where he tends to work as a co-writer and arranger.
His solo career picked up after he signed to Stones Throw, which released My Garden in 2020 and Septet in 2021. The records are mostly instrumental: electric piano, synthesizer and flute moving at an easy pace over light percussion, with roots in jazz fusion and library music. Live, Kirby leads a small band and the pieces stretch out into longer improvisations.
