Equipment came together in Toledo, Ohio, in 2016 as a four-piece working the Midwest emo furrow: interlocking clean guitar parts, tempos that shift mid-song, and vocals delivered plainly and wordily rather than sung for effect.
The guitar writing favours hooks that whiplash between parts, with sing-along sections that track the more volatile turns in the lyrics. Vulnerability sits at the center of the songs, but it's regularly cut with gallows humor and choruses built to be danced to as much as shouted.
Recordings keep a rough, unpolished edge by design, and the band has built its following the way much of this scene does: through small labels, house shows, and steady regional touring rather than radio or big rollouts.
Over time Equipment has become one of the more established names in that DIY corner of Ohio guitar music, with a stated aim of pushing at the edges of the genre and catching listeners off guard rather than repeating a formula.
