Salvador's sound-system rebellion: guitarra baiana run through dub and carnival bass, and one of Brazil's most physical live acts.
BaianaSystem came out of Salvador at the end of the 2000s, built around Russo Passapusso's vocals and Roberto Barreto's guitarra baiana, the electric instrument that carries the trio elétrico tradition. The group runs that sound through dub effects, heavy bass and sound-system logic, with a DJ and producer shaping the mix as part of the arrangement.
Their carnival appearances in Salvador use a mobile sound system rather than the conventional trio truck, with masks and banners as part of the staging. Songs like "Playsom" and "Lucro (Descomprimindo)" moved them from a local following to audiences across Brazil and Europe.
