Annie & the Caldwells

Annie & the Caldwells are led by gospel singer Annie Caldwell, performing alongside her husband and their children in West Point, Mississippi, where the family has played church services and local events for decades. Annie Caldwell first recorded as a member of the Staples Jr. Singers, the family group whose 1970s album When Do We Get Paid was reissued by Luaka Bop in 2021.

That reissue led to the Caldwells' own album on the same label, Can't Lose My (Soul). The songs are sermons set to long, driving grooves: four-on-the-floor drums, chugging bass and rhythm guitar, with Annie Caldwell preaching and calling out over the band while the family voices answer her.
