The Fall of Troy
Washington trio who made finger-tapped chaos and lurching time signatures into something catchy — Thomas Erak's guitar as lead instrument and wrecking ball.
The Fall of Troy formed in Mukilteo, Washington in 2002, with Thomas Erak on guitar and vocals leading a trio that also drew on bass and drums for a dense, constantly shifting sound. Erak and drummer Andrew Forsman had played together in an earlier band, The 30 Years War, which released two independent EPs before its guitarist left; the remaining members took a new name by picking a phrase at random from a history textbook.
Their music sits between mathcore, post-hardcore and progressive rock, marked by rapid finger-tapped guitar figures and abrupt tempo and meter changes. Screamed and sung vocals trade within the same song, and pop melodies sit inside otherwise technically demanding arrangements. The band recorded its self-titled debut in a single week during spring break in 2003, when all three members were seventeen.
The band became widely known through the mid-2000s post-hardcore scene, particularly for the track 'F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X.', later featured in several video games. Bassist Tim Ward, part of the original lineup, left in 2007 and was replaced by Frank Ene, who stayed until the band's first breakup in 2010.
The Fall of Troy reunited in 2013, with Ward returning to the bass position before leaving again in 2016, when Jon-Henry 'Hendo' Batts joined in his place. Across two decades, the band has released six full-length albums, two EPs and two singles.
