Ookay
American producer out of the first wave of festival trap, since widened into house and vocal-led material written and sung himself.
Ookay is the recording name of American producer and DJ Abraham Laguna, born January 10, 1992, and based in Los Angeles. He emerged in the early 2010s alongside the wave of producers applying trap drum programming to festival-scale electronic music, with his father, also a bassist, occasionally joining him onstage.
Early collaborations included a 2013 remix of Avicii's "You Make Me" made with Diplo, and a 2014 single, "Bouncer," recorded with Dutch duo Showtek. That same year Laguna released his debut EP, Ghost, through Steve Aoki's Dim Mak Records, saying he wanted to prove he was not limited to trap.
He became more widely known for "Thief," a 2015 track built on a saxophone hook that circulated well beyond the trap audience and was later reworked by other producers. The song's music video appeared the following year, and it reached the upper twenties on Billboard's Dance/Electronic Digital Songs chart.
A second EP, Cocoon, followed in 2016; one of its songs paid tribute to fellow DJ Big Makk, a friend who had died in a car crash. In 2017 Laguna released the singles "Stay Forever," "Chasing Colors" with Marshmello and Noah Cyrus, and "Lighthouse" with Fox Stevenson on Monstercat.
Since then his output has moved toward house tempos and song-based material, with Laguna writing and singing on much of it himself rather than working exclusively with guest vocalists. His second album, Very Special!, arrived in 2022 with contributions from Flux Pavilion, Elohim and Rachel Lorin, and singles including "Weekends," "Give U Up" and "Be OK."
