Accordionist from the Sergipe backlands, rooted in northeastern forró and inclined toward MPB arrangements. Sanfona as a lead voice rather than accompaniment.
Mestrinho is an accordionist from the sertão of Sergipe who has been playing since childhood and has worked extensively as a sideman, including long stretches accompanying other Brazilian singers. His own records treat the sanfona as the lead instrument, working through forró, baião and xote while borrowing harmonic ideas from MPB. He has recorded and performed with Gilberto Gil, and his playing is unshowy, focused on tone and phrasing rather than speed.
