Joris Voorn
Dutch producer and DJ who builds sets as long melodic arcs rather than a run of peaks, with Detroit techno and deep house underpinning the whole thing.
Joris Voorn was born in the Netherlands in 1977 and trained as an architect before turning to music full time. A DJ competition in Enschede started his career, and releases such as "Muted Trax" in 2002 and "Lost Memories" in 2003 drew support from Carl Craig, Derrick May and Laurent Garnier, convincing him to focus on DJing. He was named Talent of the Year at the Dutch DJ Awards in 2003.
He co-founded the Rejected label with Edwin Oosterwal, and the same pair launched Green in 2005. He later started Spectrum as an outlet for his own releases and a wider roster of other producers.
His productions and mixes favour melody and texture over blunt impact, moving between Detroit techno, deep house and tech house without settling permanently in any one. Albums such as 2014's "Nobody Knows," which added guitar and bass and featured Matthew Dear, Kid A and his father, leave room for slower, ambient passages between the club tracks; a fourth album, "Four," followed in 2019.
In 2009 he released "Balance014," weaving 100 tracks into a single double-CD mix, and he later reached tenth place in Resident Advisor's DJ poll. In 2020 he released GU43 for Global Underground, built around melodic tech house, saw Orbital rework his track "Never," and appeared in Tomorrowland's streamed New Year's Eve broadcast.
