HAIM
Three sisters from Los Angeles whose soft-rock harmonies sit on top of unusually muscular rhythm playing — a band where everyone swaps instruments and nobody coasts.
Este, Danielle and Alana Haim grew up in Los Angeles's San Fernando Valley, where their parents, Moti and Donna, led a family covers band called Rockinhaim, playing wedding-style sets of songs by the Beatles, Billy Joel and Van Morrison at charity fairs and community events.
Este and Danielle performed briefly in 2005 as part of the pop group Valli Girls before the sisters formed Haim together with Alana in 2007. The band was not a full-time concern for some years; Danielle first built a career as a touring guitarist for Jenny Lewis and later Julian Casablancas before Haim reconvened seriously in 2012.
Danielle handles most lead vocals and guitar, Este plays bass and Alana moves between guitar and keyboards, with all three singing. Their music combines close sibling harmony and West Coast soft-rock songwriting with rhythm playing that draws on R&B and pop production.
An early download-only EP, Forever, and a strong response at South by Southwest led to a deal with Polydor Records and a management deal with Jay-Z's Roc Nation in 2012. Their debut album, Days Are Gone, followed in 2013, reaching number one in the UK and earning the band a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.
They have worked frequently with producer Ariel Rechtshaid across the albums that followed: Something to Tell You in 2017, Women in Music Pt. III in 2020, which drew Grammy nominations for Album of the Year and Best Rock Performance, and I Quit in 2025.
