Merseybeat originals whose chiming twelve-string sound shaped a generation of jangle-pop, touring almost continuously until the end.

The Searchers began as a Liverpool skiffle group called the Army Generations, formed by John McNally in the mid-1950s and rebuilt around 1959 by McNally and Mike Pender, who renamed it after the 1956 John Ford western. With Tony Jackson on bass and lead vocals, the group worked the Iron Door Club and other city venues before a long stint at Hamburg's Star-Club, playing three sets a night for 128 nights running.

Tape recordings made at the Iron Door led to a Pye Records deal with producer Tony Hatch, and the band's first single, 'Sweets for My Sweet,' reached number one in Britain in 1963. Their run of hits also included 'Needles and Pins,' 'Don't Throw Your Love Away' and 'When You Walk in the Room,' the latter two helping establish the ringing twelve-string guitar sound later picked up by American folk-rock bands.

'Sugar and Spice,' a UK number two, was written by Hatch himself under the pseudonym Fred Nightingale, a fact he kept from the band. In March 1964 'Needles and Pins' reached the American charts alongside the Swinging Blue Jeans' 'Hippy Hippy Shake,' making the two groups jointly the second Liverpool act, after the Beatles, to crack the US Hot 100. 'Love Potion No. 9,' pulled from their debut album, became one of their biggest American hits.

Guitarist John McNally anchored the group for its entire existence, and the band continued playing regularly for decades after the beat boom had passed, working steadily in theatres and on package tours before finally coming off the road in 2025.
