Melbourne group dealing in hushed, reverb-soft folk built for late hours — patient songwriting that trusts quiet to do the work.

The Paper Kites formed in Melbourne, founded by singer-guitarist Sam Bentley and keyboardist-guitarist Christina Lacy, who had been writing songs together since high school. In 2010 they expanded into a five-piece with the addition of Sam Rasmussen, David Powys and Josh Bentley.

"Bloom," self-released in 2010 as a hand-made CD single limited to around five hundred copies, spread through word of mouth rather than any single viral moment; the song has since been certified platinum in the United States and remains their best-known track.

Woodland was recorded in 2011 with producer Tim Johnston, and its lead track "Featherstone" appeared in the season-eight finale of Grey's Anatomy. For the follow-up EP, the band worked for the first time with an outside producer, Wayne Connolly, choosing to release another EP rather than rush into a debut album.

Later albums widened the sound further, taking in slower, night-leaning material and collaborations with other singers, while the earlier catalogue has kept finding new listeners: "Bloom" continues to gain streams well beyond its original release, and the band tours internationally far beyond Australia.

As of 2026, the group has released seven studio albums and two EPs; the most recent, If You Go There, I Hope You Find It, appeared in January that year, extending a catalogue built from those early home-recorded EPs.
