The Grascals
Nashville bluegrass band with a country session pedigree, hard shuffle rhythm and a long working association with Dolly Parton.
The Grascals came together in Nashville in 2004 out of a circle of players who had spent years backing other people on stage and in the studio. Mandolinist Danny Roberts and bassist Terry Smith have anchored the band across its lineups, with Kristin Scott Benson on banjo since the late 2000s.
The sound leans hard on driving rhythm and trio harmony, with a repertoire that reaches into country songwriting as readily as traditional bluegrass. The band took IBMA Entertainer of the Year honours in its first years together, and Dolly Parton, who has recorded and toured with them, remains the association most listeners know them by.
